If I remember correctly there is some talk about the HI fees in relation to small hostels. I think in relation to hostels in the US.
If you can't dig it up I'll have a look when I have more time.
Good luck!
Hi,
This is my first post of many posts for the rest of my life.
Quick question:
As independent operators how do you compete with non-profit organizations. Why would a traveller prefer to stay at a non-profit? Input would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with other posters. It doesn't matter if you have all the money in the world, it comes down to three things...
location
customer service
character
If you look at HW's big winners the last couple of years, these are small hostels. I'm not sure if they are HI affiliated, but you'll note that their customer service scores are through the roof.
Here in the USA, we compete with 3 HI's in San Fran alone, and one each in Hollywood and San Diego - the one in SD is across the street!
It's twice as big as ours, really really nice inside - renovated a couple of years ago and has good management. But i can't attest to their fun factor and ours kicks ass on character as it's an 1800's victorian style building.
(oh, and we out rank all of them on Hostelworld)
So, i'm for independent all the way. As someone else said, you can do what you want, when you want...and i really believe it doesn't take a lot of money to give customers what they really want, and that's a memorable experience.
