I don't know if anyone else feels the same but for me a job interview is not the best way to choose your staff. Even someone who gives a great interview can be terrible as a member of staff and the other way round. After a very brief interview we will give a week or so paid trail before making any decision. In my opinion social skills are way more important than what is written on a CV or what can be said in a 30-60 minute interview, and that will only become clear during the trial.
Our best staff are all former guests who never had an interview! We are only a small hostel though, so it is maybe easier for us to pick former guests as we interact with guests so much more than a bigger hostel.
