question to all hostel owners and workers,
if you were opening a hostel, would you look to purchase your own linen or would you just hire it?
total number of beds is 110.

with that many beds, i would hire the linen from a linen dervice. that way they will pick it up and wash it for you. in the long run, it savs on a lot of costs, ie: paying staff to wash and dry, buying the linen outright, water and electricity costs. it definitely saves on hassles!

For my 50-beds hostel project, I plan to hire; but I also consider using disposable linens. Does anybody have experience ? The suppliers claim and show figures that is is eco-friendly...

How does that work? You throw the sheets out after every use?

I know hotels outsource their laundry here in the US. I think the bigger the property, the better the costs savings. One of the problems with outsourcing is the GM cannot control the quality of the work or the linens that goes on the guests bed. If you do outsource your laundry operation make sure it is a reputable dealer that guarantees there work. Sometimes outsourcing is false economy.

Easytex is a disposable linen supplier here in France (I am still in the project phase for my hostel and have not worked with them, considering also the hiring of linen):

Cheapest complete bed kit is approx. 1,50 €, VAT not included; price list, ex-works. See prices on their French version site.
Other suppliers exist. See also their arguments about sustainability: use of recycled material, recyclable, no washing (water, detergent, drying, ironing)... Nearly everybody today claims to be eco-efficient, sustainable etc.; I have no clue to decide who is better.

I'm a bit sceptical about the environmental argument. Washing and plastic bags aren't good for the environment, but which is worse -- to produce a bed sheet from scratch or to wash one? They must be using chemicals when producing the sheets too.
One environmental impact I think happens with outsourcing is from the plastic bags that many companies use to package the washed sets. We've always washed them inhouse and never ironed the sheets. Ironing seems like overkill.

I loved the way Wombats packaged their sheets when I stayed there. Been looking for a way to emulate it ever since, but I can't seem to find anyone willing to wash our sheets for a price I can deal with. I have been thinking about packaging them inhouse, it just makes them seem cleaner for the customer.

Energy & Water rates tend to be cheaper after 9 or 10 pm. If the graveyard shift has nothing to do, maybe the property can move the Laundry function from HK to FD. The hostel I worked at had a large space behind the FD, the graveyard shift could wash,dry,sort & fold laundry without leaving the FD, and still had time to do night audit functions and any internet reservations. Don't be afraid to think outside the box.

we have 35 beds. We purchased double the amount and we have a cleaning service that takes care of it.
It´s not as expensive as one should think.
For a bigger hostel, well there are so many things to take into account!
