This thread is an attempt to list hostel chains worldwide (or at least any hostel with two or more locations).
I think it would be an interesting list. If you add to the list please note any hostel chains that are owned by hotel chains and put the number of hostels in parenthesis.
I'll start a brief list that can be expanded. There might be too many to list all of them, but when the list is large enough I will compile it into one document sorted by country.

I watched it on big screen in a beer garden. They ran out of beer. I´m sure the last time such an embarrasing thing happened in Munich was centuries ago! The Brazilian girls danced on the table every time their team scored so I have to admit I enjoyed the Brazil goals a lot.

we hand out freebie vouchers when people check out of one hostel - they can claim their free beer or free breakfast at the other one. We get about 10 of these back every day - in every hostel.
That is a great idea... It could probably even be extended to different non-competing hostels in different cities -- an informal arrangement between the best hostels in several cities to respect each others' "free beer" vouchers.
It´s freaking us out, too. We charge 25 Euros for a dorm bed in Munich in summer. That´s close to 40 US$ at the moment. Which, agreed, is a ridiculous price for a dorm bed, but we don´t have much choice with 19% VAT now and the almost insane rent for the building.
USD $40 for a dorm bed is crazy, but it's the same price for a 6-bed dorm in Boston even without the exchange rate... :confused:

Ah, I thought so, too. We were member of "Europe´s Famous Hostels". I didn´t like the name (calling yourself "famous" is a bit pretentious IMHO), but I liked the idea of "good hostels" promoting each other.
I suggested exactly that, but in committees where you need a "yes" from every single member even a simple thing like that involves endless debates and rotten compromises which have nothing in common with the original idea.

I just checked on Hostelworld - you are right! Bommer. To make matters worse, the "best" choice seems to be the HI joint with a rather mediocre rating of 80%!
Just wondering why we bother with expansions in such developed and competetive markets like Berlin when it would be a walk in the park in Boston. :confused:

I know of hostels in the USA that are profitable with cleanliness ratings that sometimes drop into the 40's (%) on Hostelworld. :confused:
There are hostels that do fine in the USA with overall ratings in the 65% range.
That was one of the original motivations for creating HostelManagement.com. I don't think it's that difficult to increase ratings. There is just sometimes a lack of vision for what is possible.

Is that famoushostels.com? I noticed that they were moving through different content management systems over the past year or two. Drupal and now Typo3. I liked the older Drupal version...

im working in an HI up here in Banff which isnt bad - but it does strike me as odd that HI seem to be the best rated hostels in north america. its also part of the reason im looking around here - oh, just thought of the samesun backpacker chain here in canada to add to the list. not that theyre particularly good, but they are a chain.
one thing that would bug me about a hostel in the US is the liquor laws - 21 to drink!? there are a lot of backpackers out there between 18-21 and i wouldnt want to limit the market of the bar by excluding them, or having to be so uber-vigilant about checking ID in the bar.
