I was browsing through the old hostel news and wanted to add this news story to the "hostel chains" thread:
This thread is an attempt to list hostel chains worldwide (or at least any hostel with two or more locations).
I think it would be an interesting list. If you add to the list please note any hostel chains that are owned by hotel chains and put the number of hostels in parenthesis.
I'll start a brief list that can be expanded. There might be too many to list all of them, but when the list is large enough I will compile it into one document sorted by country.

weird. when i worked at the globie in edinburgh it was losing money hand over foot and they were looking at one more property in rome. basically london pays for everything.
dale clark's a pretty cool guy - but he admits he knows nothing about the hostelling industry and is more of a property development kinda guy. and he drinks like a fish.

A cool guy who admits he knows nothing about the hostelling industry? That sounds like an ideal boss for me! :D

he's an even better boss when he starts a tab at the 24hr bar ;)
oh, and then gets into the ol' political arguments at about 2am. good times.
i think i'll facebook a few people and see if they know anything about it - sounds like theyre hiring some people for head office to get the ball rolling.
edit: just noticed though - the article was apparently published back in sept 2006.. not sure what the deal with that is...

Sorry... it's an older article. I was editing the formatting of the hostel news section and noticed it last night. I added a link to it from this "hostels chains" thread so there would be a reference to it because it looked like interesting news.
I'm not sure if I mentioned already, but I am building a cleaner list of hostel chains on the Wiki page so it's a single-page reference that can be edited by anyone.
Still working on new features for the site... headed back to Japan in a few days and should have it done by then.

santa - hows the one in berlin coming along? its near the st christophers isnt it? i had a little poke around the site a month or so ago, couldnt see much.
i gotta say though, im surprised berlin can sustain so many large hostels, i mean there are heaps. i know the real estate is a bargain but hostel rates seem to be cheaper there than anywhere else in western europe - must be a pretty tight market?
Wombats Berlin opened last week on Friday Feb 15.
I don´t know much about the sustainability of all the other hostels, but ours is FULL right now.
OK - that might also be due to our very low prices, but filling 348 beds of a new hostel in February is still remarkable, innit?
I have edited this Hostel Wiki site a bit:
http://wiki.hostelmanagement.com/wiki/List_of_Hostel_Chains
I have started to sort the list by total number of beds. These figures are taken from Hostels.com.
Two remarkable find-outs (well, for me, at least)
* The biggest hostel chain BY FAR is A & O.
* Generator has the same amount of beds in 2 hostels as St Cristopher in 15.

Thanks for adding that info to the Wiki. The numbers are interesting.
Congratulations on new hostel -- that is a lot of beds to fill in the middle of the winter...
Those numbers got me thinking -- what is the largest hostel in the world? (single location)

in feb? yeah, thats pretty good going - but i suppose you've already built the brand up.. and yeah, the 9 euro price tag probably doesnt hurt. are you guys much cheaper than the other hostels?
oh - and update the 'jobs' section too! :P

Well, 9 Euros isn´t exactly cheap in Berlin. Our lovely neighbors (St Christopher´s) offer beds in 10-bed dorms for € 6.95 on weekdays. And that´s a pretty decent hostel.
If you´re prepared to stay in the low-rated ratholes, you´ll have ample choice of beds under € 10.

Ah, you don´t need further contact info if you want to apply. Just come round for a chat and we´ll see what we can do for you! ;)
