I have this dream of opening/managing a hostel here in Oregon. I live in a beautiful city with access to world renowned outdoor adventures including climbing, skiing, biking (road and mt.), whitewater, backpacking, etc... all within 30 min drive. The backpacker/thrifty traveler market here is untapped (besides the cheap dump motels next to the strip clubs and auto dealers) We also have great dining and shopping and a seriously cool art culture in town.
I am thinking of a 20-25 bed hostel, a couple private rooms, and a large open communal space. I have a lot of ideas to fill beds, including theme weeks (yoga retreats, biking and ski/board clinics working with local pros, women's weekends, art workshops, etc...) There are also a ton of tour companies in the area that operate rafting trips, biking trips, hiking expeditions that I would love to team up with.
I have years of hospitality industry experience, and have traveled by hostel and know what my ideal hostel would look like. I just don't have the funds to get it off the ground. If you do, and this sounds like something you would be interested in pursuing please don't hesitate to get in touch with me and ask any questions.

Hi Dan
What a great idea! Oregon sure needs hostels! I used to live in the beautiful state of Oregon. It has awesome potential for a entire adventure hostel industry along the lines of New Zealand. Beaches, mountains (climbing, skiing, sight seeing) deserts, lakes, trees, rivers, outdoor adventure, great vineyards (Willamette Valley!) Super potential to capture the West Coast travelers.
We have started and continue to operate a couple hostels in the last 7 years. One 25 bed and one 70 bed. There are different economics at play, with a large number of potential of variables. Spend some time reading the forums on this site and don't hesitate to ask some direct questions. You can always pm if you want.
What area/town are you planning to be in? Eugene/Springfield comes to mind as my first choice for a year round small hostel, but Bend, Cannon Beach/Astoria and even the Dalles for seasonal operations. Portland could use a "real" hostel as well that is separate from the HI's.
I'm interested in helping out but not financially at this time. We are concentrating on our plans in Canada.
