oooh tough one.
depends on the guests i must say. i'm a musiclover myself. maybe you should try out di.fm chillout/lounge stream. it has a low bitrate tho, the free stream. but should be good music on there.
Ive always let the front desk staff choose the music that will be playing during their shift.. being part DJ is a fun part of the job, and its always cool when guests come up to ask you to write down the name of whoever it is youre playing.. Its great walking into a place that has good taste in music... discovering new music is part of travelling, all the better if your guests find it in your hostel.. Anyways, this was never a problem because the staff here had always come up with cool music.. i dont usually like hip.hop, but even the hip-hop former staff would play was great. However, part of my staff now have crappy taste in music or are playing music very few people will enjoy, some are playing cheesy 80s music, others are playing chilean pop bands nobody knows and another guy is playing death metal cds (but lowers the volume so only he can listen to it, or so he thinks)..Seldom does anyone complain for this but I dont see guests enthralled by a certain song playing like before. im thinking of standardizing playlists or just picking a cool internet radio website to be played mandatorily. Any thoughts on this issue? For future hirings: review cv and iPod!
