I have had a lot of bad experiences with Open Office in the past, but I do like the web-based document sites like Google Docs.
OpenOffice.org (OOo), the free office suite, is breaking records:

Sample statistic:
OOo has taken 25% of the office software market in Brazil.

Compatibility problems or features? I used to write a lot of SEO reports in MS Word because I didn't think OpenOffice had the right features. Eventually I figured out how to do the same things in OpenOffice (similar layouts as in my ebook).
OpenOffice is a little different, but mostly-compatible. The new version can open MS Office 2007 documents. I'm using OpenOffice version 2.4...

I used to use OpenOffice on a Sun Workstation at my previous job, and it just never worked right. I think some of the earlier versions of the software were barely even tested, and it generally seemed like a half-baked set of applications. This was before it got bought by Sun, and likely has come a long way since then. My criticism probably no longer holds true, but it is hard to forget a bad experience.

the only issue ive ever had with it is that im used to Ms Office. its very similar - but that almost makes it harder to learn. subtle differences are often a lot harder to remember than drastic ones.
theres been a lot of 'its in ONE of the menus... whats do they call it in this version again?...'

It appears Open Office just released version 3.0. It seems their servers are getting crushed, so you probably want to use bittorrent for the download.

They finally have a native version for Mac, nice.

I just tried OpenOffice 3 on Windows yesterday. Looks good. I think Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex will have version 3 also...
OpenOffice has good marketing. Every time you update Java on a windows computer now, it offers to download OpenOffice for you...

We've had open office running on one (out of two) reception computers for a few months now. After the initial reluctance of the receptionists to try something new, it's been used really well.
Whenever someone had a question on how to do something in OO I got them to google it, so they'd learn where to find help (and half the time I didn't know the answer:p). Now most of the reception staff are more comfortable than me with it!
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I thought the above worth sharing.

I have been using Open Office on my personal computer for quite a while now and for most part its absolutely fine. Sometimes things are formatted a little differently if you transfer them from to MS Office and back.
And yes Google Docs are great! Pity Google collects all of our information though..

It's always okay to dig up old threads :)

Google is the best manual for answering tech questions...

Google's technology is incredible. The privacy issue is a serious problem though. I've been testing their software on my phone and it pinpoints my physical location down to 3 meters -- usually even which side of the street I'm driving on. They can combine that data with my searches, email (if I use Gmail), sites I visit (Google Analytics), my photo (facial recognition technology), files (Google Docs), and much more...
I think someday the World is going to realize the extent of Google's nature and wonder what happened... :)

My favourite rant used to be about Google as Big Brother, and it's becoming more true every day, but they've won me over too.
I use google apps for my personal email, calendar, documents and since I've changed, I've never looked back.
