I'm also interested, but I've got few money to invest... anyway I would run the business for a year, and see what happens.
I'm Brazilian, from Rio, and I have a rent guarantor, but you still need to pay the "luvas" this is the money that they refer to, every commercial building/house asks for it. I would try to negotiate with the property owner, mean reason is that they are not allowed, there is even if law about it.
Also the rents at good locations, such as Copacabana, Ipanema and Arpoador starts at R$4.000 for 120sqm, and R$12.000 for 400sqm...
I was trying to evaluate how much would be needed to start, and it would take at least R$150.000 being optimist.
Anyone else wants to loose money? hahaha
This week I will start to check hostels occupancy and etc... but the hotels are running just fine, with 75% occupancy.
Brazilians do not like hostels that much, is cultural, foreigners would be most of the guests, so would be cool to start this business with someone from abroad, to know how to do it.

Hello,
I want to open a hostel from next year onwards. I have been studying hotelmanagment and worked some traineeships in international hotelchains.
For the passed 6 years I have been doing several backpacking trips, mainly to Africa. This summer I will be working in a hostel to gain that experience and learn my Spanish.
I speak also Dutch, English and French. I'm also planning to learn my Portugese.
