thinking about the hostels name.

if there is a chain of the hostels
is it better to have the same name for them ?

is the name much helps to fish the backpacker to the hostel ?

i noticed some names help to fish better than others

lets say '' sleepcheap hostel'' or '' the best from the best hostel'' or
'' down town hostel''

what if one borrows the name from the famous
experienced successful hostels ?
is it permitted ?

what if the hostel will borrow the name from the '' hotels '' which have very good reputation and weight ?

would it sounds good to call the hostel '' Delta'' or '' ibis'' or ''NH'' ?

WOULD IT WORK OUT FOR THE PRESTIGE OF THE HOSTEL to call it by the bname borrowed from these types of hotels chains ?

Thanks for all your responses, it's much appreciated!

It's interesting to note such wide opinions of people in the industry. I would maybe expect friends/general members of the public to not show a definitive tendancy but I wasn't sure whether you guys would all point me in the same direction?! I guess this shows there's no definitive answer. I guess there are pro's and cons to whichever option we go with, its just a case of balancing them.

If it makes any difference, it would be a city centre hostel (prob c80-100 beds).

Ideally I would like to include a descriptive term (eg hostel and/or city name), but also keep it unique. Although I guess if it's the only hostel in the city its bound to be unique in some sense?!

Some hostels are lucky enough to have a brand that is well know by travellers who haven't even stayed there - think 'The Pink Palace' in Corfu. They are pretty much free to market themselves as a 'backpacker resort', 'flashpackers' or perhaps even 'smashedpackers' given how much drinking goes on there.

For everyone else without a well known brand, stick to a name that includes what people are looking for - 'The duck's nuts backpacker hostel' or similar. As @Hostels suggested, that way your name gives you maximum chance of being found on search engines and yellow pages (if people still use those giant books!). Then register EVERY domain name combo in .com and where you operate - theducksnuts.com theducksnutsbackpackerhostel.com theducksnuthostel.com and point them all to your site. It is VERY/EXPENSIVE hard to get them back!:D

I would say you must have the word Hostel, to show what you are (ie not a take-away restaurant or a social club).

Then, because Hostel does unfortunately have the alternative meaning of a refuge, the word Backpackers is desirable.

If you want to attract families or students equally, "Backpackers" might put them off, but having "families" in the name would certainly put off backpackers.

(I suppose you COULD call yourself "The Lounge", and then say in any publicity "We are a backpackers hostel" without having it in the name, but I find that a bit confusing.)

Taking my local town as an example, which also does not have a hostel (since the YHA closed down theirs :mad:), take the name "Shrewsbury Hostel" before anyone else does. Then you're not stepping on anybody's toes, and that should also be good in the search engines.

I guess a "Shrewsbury Guesthouse" wouldn´t scare away older folks (as it sounds like "B&B"), but Backpackers would still identify the place as their place to go. IMHO.

No, definitely not "Guesthouse", as that is specifically NOT a hostel as we define it on this forum. A Guesthouse is the same thing as a Pension or B&B and has only private rooms. There is at least a dozen guesthouses in Shrewsbury, but an individual is unlikely to find accommodation for under £30 in them.

From my experience, Guesthouse is a different concept in hotelling...right?

Then, yeah I do believe that the word hostel is necessary, because you need to separate the hostel from other places that have other types of services.

mmm Our Hostel is Kapake Palermo Hostel

Kapake: is complicated to explain but Kapa ke is a common way of saying Capaz que meaning May be And Fernando, as he built this place thought that he may be unable to pay the debt he was getting into...so this is why we have this name.
Building Kapake, took 2 years, 5 architects, and lots of patience!

Now...A couple of months ago, I found that Kapake is a Codeine tablet...so, well, damn!

Palermo: is a very know, highly beautiful neighbourhood in Buenos Aires.

Hostel: You know...

It´s a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll my friends!

Is there such a thing as a hostel name sounding too old? I have the perfect name for the hostel I plan to open because it matches the character of the building I plan to use. However, I'm concerned that it sounds like a place your grandma would go to for holiday in the countryside and not a backpacker's hostel located in the city. LOL. :D

I have an alternative name lined up which is very city sounding: cool, young and hip but doesn't fit the character of the historic building at all. How do I resolve this? Thanks.

In that case, it doesn't seem like the perfect name.
