Sounds like a good idea to cross sell to customers at the front desk. In addition to rooms there's a lot of other items that you could offer such as snacks, beverages, merchandise and tours / activities.
At our hostels we have noticed that trying to upsell to customers this during check-in could set a precedent for the rest of their stay where they believe that the hostel is trying to sell them stuff they dont need.
What we do is offer a free map to all our guests and this map is only available in our tour room. So when they collect their free map they get to know of the various trips that are available. We also have a small snacks / coffee / tea counter behind our reception which allows people to get a quick coffee and a snack and this definitely helps the bottom line.
Curious to hear how other hostels deal with upselling.
