Isn't there also another network in South America called Mini Hostels? Or do they overlap?
It´s HI OR Mini hostels.
Mini hostels Serdar Vardar is a complete sweetheart, he´s contacted me since my first month at the construction site...but as I told you, my boss wants HI:mad:
Don´t you hate it when that happens?

Well, tell him that HI is overrated, non-effective business effort which almost exiled in Europe and there is no sense to deal with them anymore.
If he want's a badge or a nice picture on the wall, join the HI but if you want more bookings and better reputation, join Mini hostels then.
If he is still complaining, show him how many hostels are on HI South America, show him what ratings they have on Hostelworld, then show him the members of mini hostels, and show their ratings as well.
Finally ask him about which group does he want to join? :D

Well, now we know that HI is not taking any other hostels in the area, and we are finally meeting with MH. It´s a relief when things come to an end.
So we are expected to be on MH in a month or so.
Now, Im woried about Hostelworld...they rejected our listing....Why?

Hi Kapake
first of all, your hostel looks beautiful. The next time I am around in Argentina I will stop by.
Ok what is the argument of hostelworld to refuse you?

"Muchsa gracias por su email.
LAmento informarle que en este momento no estamso tramitando ninguna reserva en Buenos Aires.
Por otro lado le informo que todos sus datos estan en nuestro sistema para cuando empecemos de nuevo a tramitar nuevas propiedades.
Siento no poder ayudarle en esta ocasion

Basically that they have enough beds in Buenos Aires. And that they are not accepting an other places and that our information is on file for future openings....It sounds politics to me...if you know what I´m saying.

Well, now that sounds very strange to me.
Usally they don't do this kind of politic. And as far as I could see there are round about 45-50 Hostels in BA listed on Hostelworld.
There are cities with way more.
I dont understand this.
If you cant get along with Alejandro Barcia go further to the next one, to his boss.
I have never heard of anything like this before and I work with HW for quite a while now.

That sounds really strange for Hostelworld to refuse to sell a new hostel's beds. I just checked, and Hostelworld is only listing 45 hostels in Buenos Aires at the moment (screenshot #1).
WRI has such a large share of the industry (screenshot #2 - they have 5 out of the 17 links on the Google search result) that it doesn't sound fair for them to exclude new hostels from joining. If they want to exclude hostels from the booking engine shouldn't it be based on ratings?
Are you using Backpack Online? Have they mentioned Backpack Online?
There are enough WRI affiliates out there that they should be able to offer beds for all the hostels in Buenos Aires. I wonder if they're worried that there aren't enough backpackers to fill all the hostel beds in Buenos Aires? More hostels would dilute the number of bookings sent to existing WRI hostels?
If you need to sell some beds right away while you're getting it sorted out you could try Hostelbookers, Hostelsclub, and GOMIO. The first two are buying AdWords for Buenos Aires keywords so they might be able to send some bookings.

Last year, a rep from HI came to Costa Rica, looking to add new properties to their catalog, since they hadn't had an official HI affiliated hostel for some time. They chose our hostel, and 2 others. After about 6 months we realized that it just wasn't worth the hassle. We found that the majority of the guests were over 40 years old, which isn't a problem really, but when they all seemed to be older, and high maintenance/need hand holding, we said no thanks, and asked that our listing be completely removed from HI. Sometimes maintaining a good vibe in the hostel is more important than getting every guest possible.
I wouldn't recommend that any hostel try too hard to be affiliated with HI, unless you really need some extra guests.

That's weird... especially when there are 121 hostels in Budapest!

Kapake, I'd recommend you to invest some money for a really good SEO expert and make sure you'll be on the first page. Then you won't need any other booking engine... Josh, when are you gonna visit Argentina (again)? ;)
