Hello,
I totally agree with your post, I feel the same way. I have been on a roadtrip around the U.S. since October and the lack of hostels is pretty disappointing! It has really made me want to open a hostel. I just don't know where to begin though. I have been thinking about it a lot, and asking questions of those running hostels to try to learn. I think I have the right skills, personality and experience to do it, it is just kind of overwhelming to think of making it happen, since I have never owned a business before. It is also hard to decide exactly where to start one, since there is so much potential all over the place! And then there is the financial issue....I don't have much money to work with, especially since I quit my job to travel and so have been unemployed for several months now! : )
My work experience includes reception, admin assistant, office manager, HR, bookkeeping, and on the other side, social services. So I have good people skills as well as good office/clerical skills, and am proficient on a computer. I also am good at finding great deals at garage sales and thrift stores which would come in handy with furnishing a place. I am motivated, it is just scary to me, to step out and try to make it happen! It would be great to find a like minded person and work together.
