This kind of technology might be useful for hostels in the future:
Microsoft Demos Real-Time Speech-To-Speech Translation On Skype

Also check out the Google Translate Android app, which has the same kind of functionality and might be useful at the front desk if guests and staff don't have a common language. I haven't tried it out in live a conversation yet so don't know how accurate it is.
