Bunk Bed supplier

Not sure where to post this so i'll start here.

Anyone have a great bunk bed supplier that has bunks with curtains and possibly lights built into them?

Apparently no one manufactures such things in the states and we'd like to do better than Ikea bunk beds.

While on the topic of Ikea, has anyone got a track record with their bunk beds. We just installed a few but i'm not sure how durable they will be. Anyone?

Hi...We are in Dublin Ireland and so fare we are using an independant supplier but looking into changing for the Sleeptite (www.sleeptite.ie). Ikea is too fare for us and even tought the comments are not very good about the beds.
Most of the Hostel in Dublin are using Sleeptite. If you were at the Hostel Conference in Dublin the gentleman was there with his demo.

In Dublin we are limited....we could always ask for or fine a carpenter..but its very expensive. We are still looking into it !!!

But you can also ask Dan to find a cheap carpenter company in Romania. It should be cheaper even including logistics and Romanian carpenters know their job well... especially in Transsylvania!

Hi...We are in Dublin Ireland and so far we are using an independant supplier but looking into changing for the Sleeptite. Ikea is too far for us and even though the comments are not very good about the beds.

Hostels has found out that IKEA may be interested in manufacturing a "Hostel bunk" a special, much stronger and to our own agreed design (if that is possible!) Another month or so and we should see if we have a design and a reasonable price - hang in there.

I was surprised that IKEA are not in Ireland, however, if we get it all together, they would no doubt ship for you if the order is of a reasonable size.

Yeah I will ask him...but knowing him and David,,,they want things now !!! no waiting...you know what i mean.....But its a good idea..ill keep in mind.:)

When I asked IKEA about bunk bed specifications a couple of days ago I got what looked like an stock reply (from a different person) saying that they no longer accept product idea submissions. I asked for clarification and the original employee sent me this email today:

Hello Josh,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We are always happy to
hear from our customers.

Unfortunately, at your first e-mail we were excepting new proposals.
However; that has since changed after your second contact. We do
apologize once again for any inconvenience.

If you should have any additional questions, please let us know. We
will be more than happy to assist you.

I wonder if there is another manufacturer that would be interested. I don't know why they would change their mind. It seems like whoever builds the ideal hostel bunk bed could do good business.

When I asked IKEA about bunk bed specifications a couple of days ago I got what looked like an stock reply (from a different person) saying that they no longer accept product idea submissions.

It's okay, don't take it too hard. Another big company who is unable to fulfill some demands of their costumers. Their profile is to make home furniture, not to serve the hostel industry.

I, for one, never anticipated that Ikea would go ahead and manufacture 10,000 bunks and hold them in stock all over world. Surely what we are talking about is a business proposition. They only manufacture to order. For them it is a win win situation.

I think it worth another try to get them to consider this further.

I replied, but I don't know what they will say. If they don't want to do it, I think someone else will be interested in building it :)

Maybe if the bed is designed, more than one company would want to produce a similar bed. There could be a few choices of similar beds based on the ideal hostel design...?

has anyone been to the last Hostel Meeting in Barcelona? There were a few guys from the Circus Hostel from Berlin that showed a bunk bed that was created for their needs. Maybe you can contact them about it.

“Some great ideas have been thrown up on this thread; some practical and some not quite so; some legal in some countries and some not quite so in the rest of the world!

To begin with, please, can we start out with a basic bunk design? A bunk that will be practical and heavy duty enough for our needs. Also, hopefully, that will be cheap enough for new start-up hostels. If this initial exercise is successful we can elaborate on the design in the future. Here are my thoughts:-

It will not be as cheap as you see in an Ikea catalogue, but how long do they last? This is an “industrial sized” bunk. The timber sizes are based on my own bunks which have lasted 15 years without a problem and which have been re-varnished every 3 years. If the timber is of reasonable quality you can expect a life of at least 20 years from one of these bunks – well worth the bit extra?
Please let me have your thoughts – both positive and otherwise.”
