Hey this is my first time posting here. It has been good to read through the archives. I didn't see anything that could help me budget for the staff costs. What is a good general manager wage, cleaner, receptionist, (do we pay night reception different?), assistent manager wages? I know that throughout the world wages are different but just something to go on. There are websites that help me figure out differences in standard of living.

I think it depends on the size of the hostel and the country. Small hostels often use work exchange staff.
Some sample hostel wages that I've seen:
Cleaner: work exchange up to $10+ per hour
Front desk: work exchange up to $13/hour
Hostel manager: $12/hour up to to $95,000/year

Thanks for your answer. I think I want to stay away from work exchanges since I tend to think the quality of service can not be kept at a high level if new front desk people are constantly coming through and needing training only to leave before or soon after they have made the learning curve.

The Hostel manager wage looks a little low to me.
And how do most hostels work with night reception? Do you pay a higher wage to them?:confused:

I hope our hostel managers won´t read your remark about $95k being "low"! That´s about twice as much as they get - and these are big hostels!

I guess Enjoyyourstay was figuring $12 sounds a bit low... Not the $95k part... however, it is also important matter is it before or after tax? :D
Hiring a manager depends on the skills and experience required on the field as well... The tougher market you are in, the tougher person you need! ;)

Hey guys aboriginal was right, I thought the $12/hr seemed low but it does really depend on what the scope of responsibility will be and how tough the market is like you said. I plan to open up a hostel somewhere in Eastern Europe and I am trying to put together some numbers so I can run a quick feasability test on rent and prices.
How does between $25000-30000/year sound for a manager who manages the daily operations to make sure things are running smoothly from the guest perspective?

Maybe they were either in deep shit or were looking an extremely qualified person to deal with everything...
The one you posted recently offered GBP 17-18k a year which is about USD27000...
