Also it seems no one else wants to play Risk with us, how bloody rude! :p
If we really end up in Vienna, I´ll offer free accomodation but obligatory participation in the Risk tournament! :)
UPDATE: Read more about Hostel Management Unconferences.
An "unconference" is like a conference, but participant-driven, low-budget, and informal. The agenda is typically unset.
What do people think about the idea to hold a HostelManagement.com Unconference in November or December?
An unconference is not a typical conference. There wouldn't be any one-way presentations. Hostel managers, employees, and others in the industry would get together for informal discussions and networking. It might be something like this forum, but in person. :)
I picture it as something like a "meetup" -- but the final form depends on what people are interested in.
The point would be to get people from the hostel industry in one place to exchange ideas.

Two other options mentioned in the Members' Chat were in the mountains in either Austria or Switzerland:

No answers yet, so what do people think of this idea? :)
Lisbon (and Portugal in general) has many of the highest rated hostels in the world. Six of the top 10 hostels in the world (Hostelworld.com) this month are in Portugal:
1. Travellers House, Lisbon, Portugal
2. Rossio Hostel, Lisbon, Portugal
4. Gold Coast Hostel, Lagos, Portugal
5. Living Lounge Hostel, Lisbon, Portugal
8. Goodnight Backpacker’s Hostel, Lisbon, Portugal
10. Lisbon Lounge Hostel, Lisbon, Portugal
Benefits of Lisbon:
What do people think? Is there anyone who couldn't make it to Lisbon? Any alternate suggestions?

Just checked on flights. The price is better than I thought - about 300 Euro return. But it is the journey that is the problem. To get to Lisbon from here takes 28 hours with a night in Athens Airport. The trip back is 32 hours but at least I can get a hostel bed in Iraklio for the night.
Sorry but my bones are too old for such mucking about.
Prague or the Alps still preferred.

Hey
Lisbon for me would be great, my first choice... My second choice is Alps, at least we can stay a few days more and do some ski there... :D
Cheers

Prague or the Alps sounds good to me. Is there anyone who can't make it to Prague or the Alps? December 4th - 6th?
Wherever it is held, I would be able to leave on a Friday afternoon and be back on Sunday night (Spain).
My current status is that I don't think I can make it to North America because if I go home it would cancel my travel insurance right after it begins and I would have to buy it again.

Grünau is Austria´s cheapest Ski place. A day-pass costs only 25 Euros and those who stay in the Treehouse Hostel get another three Euros discount. The ski lift is just 200 meters from the hostel. :)

hmmm... that sounds interesting. What do people think of Grünau? If we pick a location soon, I'll announce it in the next newsletter. Otherwise in the August issue.
Does the hostel (or town) have enough beds? Maybe 8 people will show up -- maybe 40...who knows? :D
Do you think the hostel would be okay with being overrun by hostel managers in peak ski season? :D

Ok, some info on Grünau so you can make up your minds.
Grünau im Almtal is a small village in the foothills of The Alps, basically in the middle of nowhere. Population 2,077, elevation 528 meters. It has a train station (it´s the last stop of a local line leaving from Wels, where the Munich-Vienna highspeed trains stop), a gas station, a small grocery shop, a tobacconist and a church. That´s it.
The Treehouse Hostel is not in the village, but a few kilometers up the road (free pickup at the station), near the ski lift, in a narrow valley, in the middle of a forest. It has been there for (at least) 15 years. It´s not a state-of-the-art boutique hostel like those in Lisbon, but it has a nice homey athmosphere. It has TWO bars, one on ground floor (usually populated by locals) and a second one in the basement. The hostel offers daily dinner for € 7, it´s delicious. There are around 40 beds in the hostel, the first weekend of december will not yet be silly season (I just called there), so there´ll be space for people who decide to go there spontaneously.
Skiing: the local skiing area is the Kasberg, 14 lifts, 40km slopes, elevation 620 - 1600 meters. It´s not very high, but the region usually receives a lot of snowfall. Skiing equipment can be rented at the hostel (as far as I know). Lifts start running on December 5 this year - perfect for us, we´ll be the first ones on the slopes!
