How can i check if receptionist steal money from reception?

Hi everybody..

I have a question: how can i check that any of my receptionists is stealing money?

Like making reservation and then cancel it, so he can take money for that reservation..

Is there any system or suggestion from u?

ps. camera it could be a option, but since we are a NGO, we are not so rich.... and another option copuld be a fake camera, but receptionist would know is fake...

Our government has recently implemented a law that requires each staff member to document how much personal money they have in their pockets at the beginning of each shift.

Wait, what!?

That was exactly my response when the law actually passed and we had to go buy a government-recognized register to record the daily pocket money. Control agents were even reported as having emptied garbage cans looking for unreported money that might have been stashed away during their visits. Utterly ridiculous.

Conducting occasional spontaneous audits of the till may help dissuade dishonest behavior. Cameras may help to reveal if it actually took place. They may also help to prove that a guest, rather than a staff member, may be responsible for missing money or inventory.

In addition to being invasive, recording audio would mostly likely just result in hours on end of rambling backpackers extensively detailing every step of their trip for your listening enjoyment.

This is reminding me of at least two other hostel managers/owners who went through huge amounts of work to spy on employees. One would use a low-tech method: hide in the bushes to watch people and listen to conversations.

Another owner put up one-way glass on the back office and moved the front desk in front of the one-way glass. The effect was that the owner and managers could watch the employees' backs from two feet away through the one-way glass. It was not a good work environment.

I don't think that one needs to go that far to minimize cash loss.

I'm assuming that you are not in the Peoples Republic of Europe Brian?

As others have said, a combination of a PMS which allows for individual cashiering, and an even better solution would be a cashiering capability where the reception person is issued a float and has to enter that in at the beginning of the shift - and the PMS can then report on unders/overs. Tye PMS can also report on user activity when it comes to the bookings... which user made or cancelled the booking, any rate changes in the booking, rate discrepancies vs default rate for example.

Marry that with a decent CCTV (ensuring the CCTV is set-up within any legal framework of workplace laws of course), is enough to deter most staff from trying to steal or pilfer.
