Will the Republican Party be the same? Can their "base" compete with the Internet? Even the media is moving in a different direction -- Keith Olbermann has more viewers than Bill O'Reilly. I think the Republican Party will have to change to survive...

Hey, I really dont want to spoil the fun of enjoying the moment. I´m not a pessimist - I was quite sure Obama would win, after all.

Anyway, never underestimate the enemy. I remember the day Bill Clinton was elected quite well because it was the day after I started in my first job as a hostel receptionist. :) There was a lot of enthusiasm, but remember how the Rebublicans took him apart in a very short time.

I´m not so sure Rebublicans really know they have to change. Most Republicans sitting in Congress now are from the South and the Mountain states, where their medieval ideology is still very competetive. These guys will certainly not change. Their base in the idiot belt couldn´t care less if Palin knows where Africa is. They loathe intelligent people.
Combine that with some frustration about unpopular stuff Obama will have to to - hence less turnout of the Democratic base - and there´s a very real danger of another nutcase in the White House in 2012.

I hope Obama is aware of that. I hope Axelrod will get Rove´s office in the White House to keep Obama alert.

During his reign US lost her reputation both economically and diplomatically.

It was very sad to watch that happen. Most people here wanted Bush out, but there was never a mobilizing force to change it.

I took this photo yesterday in the supermarket parking lot -- too bad Nancy Pelosi put a stop to it:

That is an interesting interview. It´s remarkable he says he voted Obama. Anyway, did he ever mention that before the election? We have a term for that in German: Wendehals [= snake-bird] - before 1989, everybody was a communist in East Germany. After 1989, nobody ever was one.

Don´t trust those Rebublicans talking about bipartisanship all of a sudden. It´s BS. There is a very clear mandate for Democtats now. They should make use of their majority in Congress and not bother about the other side. I hope they have read their Machiavelli.

It is of course nice to hear more reasonable voices from the Right now, but do you seriously think these will be their new leaders? They can´t offer anything else than "small government" and deregulation, which is just as discredited as anything else they did since 1980. On the other hand, their most reliable voters are still white evangelicals - they cannot possibly afford to piss them off - and they won´t.

Some might have harbored concern that Obama, with his message of inclusion and unity, would not be a fighter. Maybe those people missed the significance of Obama's political upbringing in Chicago, where politics, as they say, "ain't beanbag." Perhaps they weren't watching back in the early days, when he cleared the field of opponents by challenging their right to be on the ballot.

Things were becoming clearer by the end of Thursday, though, when Emanuel and, likely Gibbs, became part of the White House team.

Emanuel is a veteran of the White House, having worked as an aide in the Clinton administration. After winning election to the U.S. House in 2002, he has risen steadily through the ranks and is widely credited for the Democratic takeover of the chamber in 2006.

One common story sums up his reputation around Washington. In a Little Rock restaurant near the end of a Clinton campaign, Emanuel expressed dismay with Democrats he felt had betrayed the team. He picked up a steak knife and shouted "Dead!" as he spiked the knife into the table. Shouting the names of other disfavored Democrats one by one, he stabbed the table shouting, "Dead! Dead! Dead!"

I´m thrilled! That´s exactly the sort of people I would hire! :D
