What does your hostel serve for breakfast?
I'm asking because in some countries people eat a very small breakfast, and in other countries (like the USA) breakfast is a significant meal. I'm wondering if some backpackers are unsatisfied when they find out that free breakfast is a few slivers of bread and some jam, or if they just accept that it's a different culture and make do.

Cleaning up the crumbs would cost more than we save on VAT though. :D
At least we tried and it wasn't impossible neither... :D
Any ideas how to reduce the VAT then?
Obviously when you provide services, there is no much costs to reduce the VAT balance, so you end up paying extortionate amounts of VAT...

Wow. I've never heard of someone asking for a refund for breakfast. But i wonder if it's in the wording. In the US if you said 'breakfast included', that would mean something different from 'free breakfast'.
Anyway, we provide free pancake mix and syrup and guests make their own pancakes. We offer free coffee and tea all day.

I image that the pancake mix is cheap enough to provide, but is the cost of the syrup ridiculously high?

Guests go mad for the free pancakes but unfortunately dont usually know how to make them so we have to post instructions.
syrup isnt much because we're not buying 'real' maple syrup (which is like gold here) but the usual pancake syrup that most americans use which is really more of a flavored corn syrup.
but i'll tell ya, staff don't eat the pancakes for too long....

Do you have a griddle or do you give them a skillet to make the pancakes?

We use both griddle pans and skillets though i think we might move toward using more cast iron griddle pans. Easier to clean.

Argh, at ye olde piratehaus inn we have always provided free pancakes, coffee and tea. We used to let the guests make them themselves, but when I'm on duty I make special ones for the guests, so special that guests take pictures of them and put them on their blogs or websites. So google "pirate pancakes" or "pirate haus" + pancakes, and you'll see what I mean.
We use an electric griddle....

Our break fast includes:
Coffee, tea, herbal teas, Mate, Mate infusion
Two slices of bread (we have toasters)
Two croissants.
Powdered milk (non fat)
3 different types Jam, diet jams, Dulce de leche and butter.
Here in Argentina, there is no such thing as American breakfasts.
Eggs are natural, I mean real so 2 eggs are heavy as eating two steaks...no one wants to rush to their job with that on their stomachs.
Bacon is considered greasy and a liver killer.
We should include cereals though...we have the bowls and everything to serve them, but they are quite expensive here, like 4 dollars a pound...I would have to look into it.
I miss my Sunday with the heavy breakfast though...I lived in the states for 5 years and sundays we used to make breakfast with all of the killer items!
I think that this is why I lost 10 pounds when I got here...eating here is completely different.

Some recommendations:
Skip the croissants completely (expensive) and leave there two kilos of sliced bread (cheap) in a basket without portioning them. Most people will take few slices more but no one will complain because they couldn't.
The guests need lots of sugar and carbohydrates for their walks: we also provide cheap nutella which is very popular.
I suppose tropical fruits as bananas and pineapples are very cheap there... that could be a big extra for tourists!
Is there any store where you can buy bulk food? They should provide huge bags of cereals for quite cheap, or you could ask few other hostels around in the neighbouring cities (or just ask through the minihostels network?) about where do they get their cereals...
