I had some Marmite in Budapest (at Aboriginal Hostel). It wasn't bad. I would eat it again. Not sure how different it is from Vegemite though...
What does your hostel serve for breakfast?
I'm asking because in some countries people eat a very small breakfast, and in other countries (like the USA) breakfast is a significant meal. I'm wondering if some backpackers are unsatisfied when they find out that free breakfast is a few slivers of bread and some jam, or if they just accept that it's a different culture and make do.
Here's a list of reviews on Hostelworld that talk about free breakfast:

Breakfast IN bed, exactly! We´ll tell them our customers don´t use the beds to sleep in them, they EAT there. :D
I think you could really start a new breed of hostels there guys... Sounds awsome.
I personally like the idea of free (included) breakfast. No one really complains here anyway. The cost for a night is sooo cheap here (in Poland). Plus the backpackers can always go to the grocery stores, buy their monster breakfast and cook it here.
Unless you can prove me wrong santa klaus, if you sell breakfast you must have people managing to take food without paying. Though, I've seen some pretty good systems in larger hostels.
But If you are a small or medium size hostel, I think it's better to include it in the price.

hmm, how different is marmite from vegemite? speaking as an aussie who was raised on vegemite and loves the stuff (packed a few jars into my luggage and was delighted to discover it was sold in the UK, albeit at bizarrely inflated prices) marmite makes me want to puke...:p
I've used the cereal/toast option for breakfast in the past (bought in bulk, offer a few kinds, fresh milk), fruit juice, basic fruit and toast (fresh bread from bakery across the road - pointless i guess as it was going to be toasted but it sounded/looked good! we let guests cut it themselves and i'm sure a few sneaked extra for their lunch) we offered a heap of spreads etc and found that this collection had a habit of mutating over time, like a hostel bookswap library...:)
my favourite scottish hostel (Dun Caan, Isle of Skye) used to do Norwegian waffles for breakfast...
