Is it sweet or salty?
It tastes like extremely concentrated salty yeast. If you weren't raised on the stuff the taste will probably knock you over. I find it repulsuve, and I'll eat anything!
What does your hostel serve for breakfast?
I'm asking because in some countries people eat a very small breakfast, and in other countries (like the USA) breakfast is a significant meal. I'm wondering if some backpackers are unsatisfied when they find out that free breakfast is a few slivers of bread and some jam, or if they just accept that it's a different culture and make do.
Here's a list of reviews on Hostelworld that talk about free breakfast:

its a bit like cricket - if you havent been raised with it, you'll never quite get it.
thin piece of white toast, loads of butter and a scraping of vegemite.
gods gift to breakfast.

about the vegemite thing
You should really check where your guests come from a lot of Europeans hate that stuff! and i guess backpackers do not expect to find the exact stuff to eat in South America (for Kapake :)) I would not do that!
just some thoughts from my side!

I've never had Vegemite, but would like to try it. I've never seen it here in the US.

I'm in a small town now, but headed to DC next week. I'll ask on Thorn Tree if there's anywhere to get it there...

"We believe that good breakfast is good start of a day...":)
If it is really good it is one of the things the guest wouldn't miss so it helps to bring people together around the kitchen. I notice that a lot of them decide to explore the city together after have breakfast at the same table. Big tables help a lot.:)

We had fruit, bread, jam, honey, margerine, eggs, tea & coffee. Pancakes, waffles and even brownies were latter added but I saw no corresponding improvement in the HW rateings. It was not manned/maintained so the presentation detariated during the morning.

Don't change your socks for 60 days and do a lot of hiking in the muck. Then scrape the toejam from between your toes, and you have the homemade equivalent of Vegemite! Find the cheapest crap for beer to equate a Foster's which no self-respecting Ozzie will drink and you have yourself an 'outback meal'. ;-)
When done right, it's pretty good, but you need an ozzie to show you how to properly apply the stuff....
America and australia are two great countries colonized by the British. The British sent all their convicts to Australia and all their religious extremists to America. Frankly, I think Australia got a better deal!
