Craig - I think when people think of 'the cloud' we think of universal access to the data/software. This means one can access it from their phone, tablet, laptop, PC/Mac, whenever and wherever they are. So if I get a call because there's an issue at the hostel, I can log in on my phone and see what's happened/happening and effect things rather than having to get out my laptop and use a particular piece of software.
Perhaps this is more a case of these solutions being 'web based', rather than 'cloud based'. If a piece of software is truly 'cloud based' that strikes up the image in my mind that if my PC dies, I can just whip out my phone and access exactly as I would've otherwise, albeit on a smaller screen and a fiddlier keyboard.
