Hostel in Spain.....But Where?????

Hi everyone.....

I am looking for some advice on where in spain a good place would be to open up a backpackers

i was thinking of seville....obviously Barcelona is one of the main places but also very expensive.
Do many backpackers/travellers go to the coast of spain,which areas?

Also do you have any advice on any other european countries that would be a good possibility.

People DO go to France. Paris and Nice are the main spots though. It´s the same with Germany: Berlin and Munich are extremely popular, but the whole rest is completely under-rated. There are plenty of small hostels all over Germany though. I have no idea why there are so few in France.

I agree with Klaus, people do visit Paris. I think the best answers would come from some Paris hostel owners but as my own I suppose a lot of regulations could be a reason.

Otherwise there are lots of countries even in Europe, where the term hostel doesn't even exist in the law!!! :confused:

In Paris you can hardly find many hostels but a lot of budget hotels, which definitely makes their stay shorter, although they WILL visit Paris. ;)

It is probably the same problem with Venice, Milan or Florence... Which is a pity, most of the backpackers spend about 2-4 weeks in Italy! :rolleyes:

Don't be confused if you don't find a hostel in a popular city! If you take a look on Croatia for example, the oldest hostels are about 4 years old... Before the first hostels, people were staying in either 3 star hotels or in apartments or just camped with their tents! Backpackers are very ingenious species! ;)

Europe gets a lot of backpackers. If you find a town that backpackers would like, you could probably put it on "the backpacker trail" with some good marketing. Some hostels can become destinations themselves...

If you want to open a hostel in Germany, could be useful to contact the German Backpacker Network, they promote backpacking as inland tourism, so you can expect many Germans as well. Berlin and Munich are the most popular cities, but Germany still have a lot of "hidden" treasures, just like Trier, an Unesco World Heritage City, has only one hostel there...

Portugal and Spain are getting more popular destinations regarding the good weather and the cheap prices, therefore the off-season period is relatively short. ;) I would vote this option if I could! :cool:

Hi
Paperwork will be hard anywhere in Spain. It's a pain in the arse, so if you don't speak perfect lawyer spanish get a spanish lawyer. And you have to be very, very patient. It might be easy to find a financier or a cheap building because the real estate market is crashing in Spain right now.
Spain is full of popular destinations like: Toledo, Cuenca, Zaragoza, Bilbao, Santiago de Compostela, Segovia... and people do go to these places

hi thanks for the advice.
does anyone know if people tend to travel on the coast below granada eg Almunecar or nerja?....these places look very nice or do backpackers/travellers tend to stay to the cities?

cadizgets a few backpackers - malaga gets loads of tourists, but its mostly hotels and resorts, loads of sunburnt english. when i was in tarifa back in... crap, i cant even remember when it was... must've been march 2007(?), anyway its not the most exciting city in spain, but a great leaping point to morocco and a mecca for windsurfers, a hostel was under construction, but it was a couple of clicks out of town.

The problem with small(er) cities anywhere is that hardly anyone stays more than on night.

There are exceptions as well... ;) If you've been to Cesky Krumlov! You can easily spend a week there without noticing! :D Hiking, horse-riding, rafting, etc.

Also there is Interlaken, almost without an off-season. Skiers on winters, backpackers during the summer!

Small cities do well if you have enough activities! :cool:

here in banff about 2/3 of our guests are here or planning on being here for 4-5 months... but theyre working rather than travelling.

Yes, of course. I have been in Krumlov, too - unfortunately only 4 days. I thought that would be enough for a small town (pop. 5000!). :)

The problem is that Europe is less and less a place where backpackers go just to roam about without planning every toilet visit months ahead. People like that go to Latin America or Southeast Asia since a long time.

I know the owner of YoHo in Salzburg very well - he says hardly anyone stays more than one night in his place.
