What kinds of software or services do people use to take bookings through your own Web sites?

I'm especially interested in services that run on hostels' own Web sites and that can handle taking bookings at multiple locations.

You could probably send people to the smaller hostel from the big hostels...
That´s true. Maybe not so many who are already staying, but lots pf people who visit our website would think "oh, they have a place in [small town], I might go there next time."
The Flying Pig Beach Hostel (45 minutes outside Amsterdam) would be lost in space without the popular sister hostels in the city center - so, that obviously works very well.

reading all this, i think i need to take a course in web development or something - so i at least have a clue what all the technical jargon you guys are using is about!
personally, i often use websites like hostelworld/bookers et al to lookup hostels, but then i search for the hostels own website and try and book through that. is there a way of tracking if other people do that?

"CMS" means content management system. They are programs that you put on your Web server that let you easily manage your pages through a Web browser. The content is stored in a database. Hostelmanagement.com (the main section of the site, not the forum) is built with a content management system.
I think that hostels (or just about anyone) should use content management systems for their Web sites because it makes the Web sites easy to update, and easy to add a lot of pages of content without the editors needing to know any Web design knowledge.
I usually try to book directly at hostels also...

Yes, our hostel is part of the go2 system. Back office is good, you just have to print out the reservation but it doesnt support auto downloading yet.
