Yes, but computers have a disadvantage. If you have the result of someone´s mistake on a computer screen, not everybody recognized it as a mistake, because people think "the computer is always right". Sounds trivial, but results in unnecessary debates with guests who are actually right but not trusted because they are "only" human, hence fallible.

I don't really see that as much different to a paper system - if it's written down according to "the system" then the receptionist will think it's right - even if it's as a result made on a previous day or shift. There will always be a tendency for a receptionist to believe the system rather than the customer - whether the system is a book or a computer. The important part is trying to reverse this to believe the customer - especially where small sums of money are involved. Certainly at least give the customer the impression you believe her, even if you don't.
