I´ll arrive in Dublin on Saturday evening already (along with another Wombats staffer who should be good at Risk). Why don´t we waste the Sunday afternoon with a match THERE? I mean - what do you do on a January Sunday afternoon in Dublin anyway? :)

I have written up instructions how to look for cash-up mistakes in our internal forum. The staff is supposed to really really look hard for a mistake - if that means he/she has to stay an hour longer - bad luck. If no mistake can be found, they have to leave a note in the cash-up. In nearly all cases, the manager finds the mistake the next day. Then the manager informs the evildoer what exactly the mistake was, so he/she can find it without the manager´s help the next time.
That's the way we did it also. I used hostel front desk manuals (troubleshooting section) and a "shift report worksheet" because we didn't have forums.
There were also supposed to be mid-shift counting of cash and credit as well as whenever a guest disagreed with the front desk about how much cash/change was given (e.g., guest says they gave a $50 bill and front desk thinks it was a $20).
At two hostels I worked at, the owners expected everyone to pay for shortages out of their pockets. The other one had no system at all (no reservations, no computer, no shift report). I'm not sure if they counted beds or money. Just "take all the cash in the box at the end of your shift and put it in a deposit envelope and walk it over to the bank." :D

no idea, i havent even been to ireland before (how? backpacking around europe for over 3 years and havent made it to ireland yet!)
im not sure where ill be flying in from yet... i might pop in to some friends in berlin... i DO still have to check out the rooftop wombar :cool:

Well, you said no to Globetrotters once...and their reviews are not that convincing anymore (derail: you can get more bad reviews if the prices are too high: it makes people pickier! :D). Barnacles is booked out except for 4 bed dorms. Kinlay still has availabilities.
I'd try Camden Place, well priced, it ain't close to Temple Bar at all, much more close to the conference though (second main street south).
At least we could try local pubs instead of tourist priced ones and we don't have to worry much about finding the conference with a hangover.
I tried to find any phone numbers or e-mail address to enquire but it seems online booking will be the only option in case. They only have four twins (shared bathroom) available, the rest are ensuite dorms...

I know how that feels! My regret is about I haven't been outside of Dublin yet! Always in pubs where 5€ (now even 6-7) for a Guinness instead of 3€! :D

yeah, apparently prices are pretty brutal. still, considering ill have just spent a week in the french alps, i dont think irish prices are going to make me cry THAT much...

That's just one thing about the prices... Just came back from Belgium, the prices are not that bad there either! ( Last time I was driving there, it was more fun!)
Back to the derail, I would prefer to go to the real Irish countryside with authentic Irish pubs and with lots of locals. It is also cheaper of course, but at least I don't have to buzz around ages to find Irish culture which is very hard in Dublin.
