Hi,

I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

Hi Peter,

I don't know much about the Ukraine, but given the growth of tourism in Eastern Europe as a whole I would expect that more and more backpackers are including Kiev on their itinerary..Although I imagine you would be able to see evidence of that yourself.

Working in a hostel is a great way to learn more about the industry, but more importantly if you like the work.. I would also encourage you to do some travelling and stay in a few different hostels..This will give you an idea of what backpackers will expect you to offer in your hostel. Or try checking out some hostel websites. I think the best hostel I've stayed in was in Krakow Poland.. www.nathansvilla.com (when I stayed there it didn't have the bar)..

Hello!! My name is Holli and I have recently taken over a hostel in Talkeetna Alaska. This is my thrid year here and I love it. My hostel is fairly small (2 private rooms, 2 bunkrooms, a private bunk cabin, and a mini - delux VW Van private room!!! how could you not love that?!), and it is family ran. We have two children (ages 3 and 6) and they love spending their days making friends from all over the world. Everyone loves having the kids around because it helps them relax and feel more at home.

hi! I just joined :) my name is sara and i'm from nyc. eversince i started travelling heavely and staying in hostels - about 3 years, i've wanted to open and run my own. I love the idea of solo backpackers getting to know one another, advising people of all the great things to do and see in my city,and just creating a nice and friendly atmosphere. hopefully one day my dream will come true :)

Hi guys, I'm in the Venezuelan National Fencing Team, and traveling around the world I've met a lot of hostels, since those places were the best thing while I was traveling, and seeing that is a growing market all over the world, I decided to open my own "first" hostel in Venezuela, My country only has like 4 hostels listed in this Country, and all of them are in Margarita Island, so i wanted to open this one near my city in Valencia, and the next one near the Rainforest, one in "los LLANOS Venezolanos" and to encourage people to join to the big hostels net around the world... Guys is a Virgin market... And I'm looking for partners as well

Hello ya'll out there! My name is Wakan and I recently got an offer to run a new hostel that will be opening up in Casco Viejo, Panama. I am very familiar with the country as I served there as a PeaceCorps volunteer in 2005. I was stoked to find this forum, and excited to see what I can get out of it. My husband and I are working towards our goal of opening a hostel. We are looking for a property right now in metro areas in SC/NC. Any and all suggestions or comments would be accepted. This site looks like a great source for knowledge!

Hi, my name is Wakan and I have recently gotten involved with a group that is opening an new hostel in Casco Viejo, Panama (the old part of Panama City) and I stumbled across this website looking for information on what a hostel should have, and how to make it a memorable experience that will increase word of mouth. Hi, I am Rich, owner / manager of the Trojan Horse Lodge in Ludlow, Vermont, USA. I have been at this as a part time thing since 1983. We built the hostel in the barn of a farm house in the village. We built in 18 bunk beds with twin size innerspring mattresses. we have a small but addaquet(?) common are and a self service kitchen. We are located in a major ski resort area. The other months we are not busy at all.
If anyone has any thoughts or questions about running a hostel, I would be glad to offer my experiences and opinions. Later .. Rich

Firstly, thanks for sharing your experience and the offer of advice! At present I’m doing some research on opening a hostel in Bangkok. My question: what are the good/bad things about running a hostel?

I just found this site today. Its been helpful for planning a hostel. In the next year or so my wife and I will be starting a hostel in Brooklyn, but for longer stay guests and international students. We will start with 6 beds and work our way up to 10.

I hope to be talking to lots of old and new members to this site.
