I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

Helllo my names Rob and i own the back packers hostel in Sighet Marmatiei,Maramures, North of Romania. Its a eighteen bed unit and while busy in the summer (packers everywhere on the floor, hanging from the cieling,in tents in the back yard), now its empty.
We get the odd passer by but no real business, and yet we have 20 cms of snow,and the locals are skiing on the local slopes.I cant work out how to promote this place as a all year round accomodation. Any ideas welcome i think i might be missing somthing here.

I think you are thinking along the right lines when you mention the snow, I'm sure people would be interested in coming somewhere different (and possibly cheaper). Maybe you could put together some packages with a local ski gear hire place or ski lesson place along with your accomodation?

Invite receptionists from Budapest and Bucharest for a weekend away at your place. Don´t charge them anything and make sure there´s enough booze for them. When they leave, give them flyers of your place - or better - make little posters (like 30 x 50 cm) with lots of pictures of your hostel and nearby slopes, so they can stick them on their information boards at their receptions.
The Treehouse Hostel and Euro Youth Hostel in the Austrian Alps do exactly that. There are always many backpackers in the hostels in the big cities, and often they ask the receptionists where to go in the mountains. If these receptionists know your place as a welcoming, fun hostel in an attractive area, they will recommend it.
Apart from the booze, that won´t cost you anything.

Hello! My name is Brian. I am not a hostel owner yet, but I am an avid backpacker, and eventually I plan to open a hostel somewhere in Europe. I have experience working in hotels and resorts, but I prefer the atmosphere and clientele of youth hostels. I am currently traveling around Europe in search of a new city in which to settle down and call my home. I'm also taking the opportunity to interview travelers and hostel staff and to check out the wide variety of hostels that are already in existence. I plan to work in hostels for the next few years to gain experience, network with others in the industry, and to learn the nitty gritty of the business from the inside. Running a hostel has been my dream for many years, and now I am finally setting gears in motion to make that dream a reality.
