I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

My name is Lyuba, i'm from Russia, Saint-Petersburg, we are planning to start-up a new hostel in my city this year.
I was working 1,5 year as the receptionist in two different hostels, and i was the manager in another one for the summer period. For me now, it is not just the way to earn money, it is my lifestyle as, i think, for all of you!

My husband and I started a new hostel in St. Augustine, FL last year. We have been open since October and every month we have seen more bookings. So the business is building.
QUESTION: Does anyone know of management software that integrates with all the different booking engines? I can see bookings getting out of hand and a potential for double bookings.

The only software I know of that integrates budget acomm sites is siteminder.com. It is geared towards sites in the Australian market but integrates with hostelbookers and a few others. Unfortunately, they don't integrate with hostelworld. It seems that HW doesn't play well with others (please correct me if I'm wrong here).

My name is Steve and since travelling the world, working and teaching in hospitality, i would like to open a Hostel in Argentina. ( I live in Australia). i love Argentina and hope to one day live there. I guess we all fall for something, someday.!

Analysing Argentina i would definately use Buenos Aires as a starting point to to launch a hostel. Its the mayor hub city and most airlines around the world who are expanding into Sth America are doing it via BSAS. I think one would also have to understand the current economic downturn the world is experiencing and its effect on the global tourism market.

There is such an abundance of hostels in Buenos Aires - I wouldn´t open shop there.
Rio de Janeiro could use a few more good hostels though.

Buenos Aires is a great place to open a Hostel. But you do have to invest in the property and in any type of theme so it attracts people. Palermo is crowded but other areas like Tigre are not that exploited. This is outside Buenos Aires but a great portal to any uruguay tour and the possibilities with outdoor activities are amazing. Nightlife you can create indoors or just take a train...30 mins and you can be in downtown Buenos Aires in a blink.
In Argentina, HOT spots right now: Calafate, Salta, Iguazú, Mendoza (soon too crowded and exploited will turn tourists to San Juan), Cordoba And Puerto Pirámide.
