Introduce yourself
Hi,
I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

Hello! I am the National Sales Manager for Hostelling International USA, a network of 70 quality hostels in the US and part of the larger HI network of more than 4000 hostels worldwide. I mainly work with groups traveling and staying at our hostels but also do some marketing and attend a lot of travel conferences. I look forward to "meeting" others on this forum who have a passion for travel and hostels and who maybe have some insight on sales as well.
I have stayed in hostels all over Europe (starting when I studied abroad in Grenoble France in 1998) and have also added some in Australia on a recent work trip. Have met some great people and really love the concept of hostelling! Happy 100th Anniversary of hostelling worldwide this year!
Cheers,
Amanda

Welcome to the site! I've had a great time at many of the HI-USA hostels, especially HI Point Loma San Diego Hostel which was the first hostel I ever stayed at :)

Are there any travel conferences you would recommend? There is a conference calendar on HostelManagement.com, but it needs more events.

Hello everyone!
I'm from the U.S., living in Argentina. I've already read through alot of these forums, and first of all I'd like to say thank you to everyone involved, it is such a good resource!
I've loved hostals ever since I travelled Europe a few years ago.
My dad and I purchased a house here (Argentina) together, and we are thinking of making it a small hostal. Although I don't have any experience working at a hostal, I have stayed in quite a few and I feel capable and excited to provide travellers with a comfortable, fun place to stay. Considering we will only have 19 beds, at least to start, I thought it might be possible to research as much as possible, then learn as I go. I have plenty of family and friends willing to help, and the house is bought and paid for, so those are two issues I won't have to deal with. Does this sound reasonable? It sounds like alot of the hostals on here are rather large, and I've read a 60 bed hostal being referred to as small. What do you think, is it possible to start out with 19 beds and no working experience in a hostal?
Thank you in advance!
