Hi,

I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

Hi everyone, what a great website =)

Well I don't own a hostel (although have worked at 2 in the past) but I have stayed in many many hostels & don't really understand why anyone would travel any other way! I love travelling solo and hostels are perfect for this - thank you to all the hostel peeps on this website who make your hostels such great places to stay =)

I'd love to open a hostel one day - for now I've just got my head down saving some coin for South America next year but hey it's as good a time as any to get thinking about it and getting some advice on the way... hope that is an ok introduction & look forward to chatting to you on the other forums!

Welcome !
I think Australians are one of the best hostel runners and one of the best best travellers !
I meat a few profes.travellers and most of them were Australians.
So , if you will open the hostel some where , I am sure it will be succesful !:D

Hey Everyone,

This site looks great! About me: I've got a healthy addiction to traveling and I've enjoyed staying at many hostels. I reside in Waterloo, Canada (technology capital) and I've had the opportunity to work for 2 start-up companies (one of which is my own).

My partner and I are looking to start up a hostel, location TBD. Any advice is welcome!

A quick question... What are the pro's and con's to building your own hostel as opposed to buying one out? (Or is there a 3rd and 4th option)... thoughts?

I know one in Scotland where the owner originally ran a city hostel then moved into the country and ran a campground/bunkhouse for a while. He then built his own hostel on his land, and it's virtually perfect in its design! But he had a lot of experience of hostels and related accommodations. It might be more risky for someone who does not have experience of running hostels to design one from scratch. There's always a lot of bureaucracy to go through, including things like planning permission ("you can't have a roof that colour!").

Hi, everyone!

First of all... what a great website! From what I´ve seen so far, excelent source of useful information for potential hostel owners/managers.

My name is Vadim, 29 years old, russian. I´ve spend a lot of time travelling and doing different things in US, UK and other countries. In England I was working/managing one of the hostels in Central London.
Last three months I was running a bar in Lloret de Mar, Spain.
Now I am relocating to Barcelona. I really want to open a hostel here and now working on it. Through competition is high I really believe I can make it.

Any advice from people running a a hostel in Spain regarding laws and liabilities would be highly appreciate. Actually, ANY advice is very welcome!

Hey Uktrail! Thanks for your note. You wouldn't by any chance have that guys contact :) .... I like to set the bar high, so designing a hostel seems much more interesting!

Hi Everyone,

I have been reading parts of the site for a few weeks now. It seems like a great resource for information on starting a hostel. It has been an idea of mine for awhile now to start one. I will definitely be posting a bit more in the coming months as I have some questions!:)
