I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

I'm Nicole and I live in southern Ontario and I'm looking into opening a hostel in an area that lacks severely.
I live in a small one bedroom apartment, and host touring bands on a regular basis. I've thought about starting a hostel as soon as I started putting up bands.

I'm Luka from Zagreb, Croatia. I've been lurking on this forum and wiki for quite a few months now, and it's really a great site with lots of useful information's.
I'm looking to open a hostel in Zagreb somewhere this year.
Luka: Zagreb has several hostels, although you might well believe there is room for more. But have you thought about Plitvice National Park? It's a little difficult to reach accommodation by public transport, and the only accommodations are 'sobe' which are good, but for solo travellers expensive and not ideal. There's a real need for a hostel in the area, if possible near the park entrance. Have you thought about Plitvice as a place to start a hostel?

I am really happy that you have put this site together.
My name is Andrew, I'm an Aussie and I would like to open a hostel in Prague Czech Republic. So far other than saving money I don’t really know where to start. I have started to write a business plan and get all my ideas on paper but eventually it comes down to things like costs,pricing and a lot of industry or local knowledge. I don’t plan to open the hostel til 2008-2009 but I’m sure there are things I should be thinking about or doing now.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Hey there, we're a couple (Livia & Gabriel) from Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania (Romania) and we want to open up a hostel as soon as possible. Actually, we hope all will be done in 2-3 months! We find this website extremely useful and interesting and we believe it will help us create our "dream hostel" .

This is my introduction but i have been reading the forum for a while now :)
It really inspired me how many people share this somewhat odd dream of running a hostel, and i love the fact that so many are well on theyre way.
Me and my girlfriend (who is japanese) is looking into opening a hostel in Japan, we are looking into Izu, and Nasu at the moment.
At this point its the financing that seems to be holding us up, we have ideas coming out of our ears but not enough money to back them up :o
Anyway, i hope to brainpick as much as possible, and maybe someday i can be the one being picked at ;)

Greetings from Romania, my name is Dorin Taranu, I have 22 years old and very soon I will finish my economics study and the diploma has the theme of hostel management, because I'm very passionate about this domain ,,the hostel concept". This ,,bug" I took 2 years and half ago when I made a study project for JAR Contest (Junior Achievement Romania) where I won the first place with a business plan ,,Transylvania Hostel - Cluj Napoca" and very soon the hostel from the paper became a real hostel in Cluj with this name and I was working there for 2 years.
And also because of this ,,bug" I also start the blog ,,Totul despre Hostel" = All about hostel (translation from Romanian in English) for Romanian persons to learn about this interesting life in hostel and the promote hostels in my personal blog.
If some hostel managers are interested to promote their hostel for Romanians I glad to post it and also a short or long descriptions about their hostel. Free of charge of course:D:)
And at the final of this topic I want to ask your help for my diploma because there are very few materials about hostel management and also if you can help me make a study about hostel management in different parts of Europe.
For example : how is the hostel management in France vs hostel management in Germany :).
And if are some hostel managers and staff to response for a short questionnaire.:)

Welcome to the site!
I would watch to see what happens Izu as K's House is about to open quite a big hostel in Ito Onsen in Shizuoka in an old Ryokan. It will be interesting to see how they go.
Nasu is quite a nice area for a hostel as there is some great hiking, onsens and skiing around there.

Yes, my girlfriend works at Kshouse in tokyo at the moment so we are following every step :D mr K is definitely doing something right ;)

Any experience with japanese hostels?
My biggest challenge at the moment is the language, it takes some getting used to being illiterate :P
