Hi,

I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

Hello, I'm Merry. I've been offered the job as innkeeper at a hostel in Tennessee, where I was staying over the summer. I'll be starting in March, as it's only open for the spring/summer season. I worked in the kitchen while I was there, but this will be my first management job. Fortunately, I'll be working along side someone who has been there for quite some time.

So, I'm in Texas for the winter, and looking forward to hanging around this forum as I get things sqaured away to return to TN next year.

HOSTEL SEATTLE

Hi Everybody! Lee here from Hostel Seattle. I only posted once quite some time ago with opening our little 30 bed hostel. Now we have moved (we own our new bulding!)2years later and are 5 times that size! Holy Crap I cant believe I just wrote that ...5x!!! Well its been crazy , but I am on a mission! I am simply here to get into it! Whatever it takes to get U.S. travellers of their asses and on the road! I will be here,in the forum, often to help "stir the pot". Peace my freinds...
p.s. I have been documenting all this crazyness from the beginnning.

Hi,

My name is Sky. I'm one of 6 collective owners of Alexander House, in Charlottesville, VA. The biz has actually been going for several years, but the 6 of us formed an LLC and purchased the biz, assuming ownership and management Oct. 1st of this year.

My role in the group has been more behind-the-scenes. I took care of the lions share of the legal and financial structuring. I have a background in organizational structures and dynamics (particularly cooperatives and collectives), and it's been great to learn the legal/financial side of things. We're all first-time biz owners.

Not sure what else to share right now. I'm looking fwd to gleaning the wisdom of this forum.

Hi! My name is Francisc and I'm from the small town of Turda in central Transylvania. In the near future I would like to open a hostel in my home town.The potential is great even if we are in the "shadow" of our bigger neighbour city, 30 km away: Cluj Napoca with some succesful hostels.We have the building and we are working hardly on making it a backpackers heaven. We have no experience on hostel management but we hope to learn from your wonderful site how to do it.Our place will be a small one , only 32 beds on 9 rooms in a three storey building.We will have only 3 rooms with private bathrooms, and the rest (on second floor and the attic) with common bathrooms. We hope to organise some outdoor activities from the hostel: rafting, kayakig and caving,canoeing and mountainbiking, due to the great potential of the region (Apuseni Mountains) , but allso cultural tours. What do you think , our dream is realistic? The reception will be open between 8-22, its wise to leave the clients alone during the night? What do you think , we should start to make out web site before or only after the beggining of our activity, when pictures will be available?Thank you. Francisc.

It's never too early to start building a hostel website. Even a "coming soon" page can help by getting you ranked in the search engines before you are open.

Good luck with your project, please let us know if you need any help.

The potential is great even if we are in the "shadow" of our bigger neighbour city, 30 km away: Cluj Napoca with some succesful hostels.

You can use the advantage of those successful hostels to promote your own business... those hostels in Cluj are rather partners than competition: There will be more guests coming to the area if there are two towns to visit instead of one...

IMHO you could generate more traffic even if you just show the construction step by step and maybe blog about it! Everyone is interested about how a hostel was born! ;)

Hello ,yes, works at our hostel are in progress and we are so excited to do it... We are not considering the hostels from Cluj as "competitors", far from that! We are sure that this market (I meen hostelling) is growing specially after Romania has joined to EU. Thank"s for advices! Maybe I will post some pictures too about "our place".
