I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

Thanks for replying so quickly! I would love to work in Mexico but at the moment I have to stay in Australia and save and get some sort of base. I would love to see a link of your hostel and some details of duties the manager does there :-)

My name is Alex and I've traveled and stayed in hostels in over 50 countries. Traveling is my passion and sometime in the near future I would like to start my own hostel in Central America. From a work standpoint my background is in online marketing and I've recently started a company to help hostels grow by promoting them online. As I'm sure you are all aware, technology has drastically changed the way that people travel over the last decade and my aim is to make sure hostels keep their bunk rooms full through online marketing.

Hey everyone, my name is Viktor.
While I juggle my four jobs and two full time-studies in Oslo, Norway, I dream of starting a hostel in this city of the north. Last winter, a friend and I had a five week pop-up project, to check out how the marked was for such a hostel venue. The results was really good. This is why I currently work 24/7 - to enable my self to boot strap this project. The reason that I am here, is not only to learn the science behind it all, but also get in touch with fellow minded people who might want to join the project. Either an investor or a partner who are ready to get hands on. Until then, I will continue work-study pace, and hopefully it will all pay off some day.

Welcome to the site. I'm curious and intrigued about your "Pop-Up Hostel" concept. I have heard of other hostel owners testing there proposed hostel location with an Airbnb listing. Is that what you did or something else? This would be a great forum discussion in itself: "How to test your proposed hostel location".

Yeah, perhaps "Pop-Up Hostels" are a viable venture, and a possible thing. Might be something to consider now that the summer season is arriving in some months.
We rented an apartment on the upper west side of Oslo, and with 140 sq/m we fitted in over ten beds plus the necessary furniture to set a good atmosphere. Even though all the furniture was free, due to the Norwegian equivalent of Craigslist, it really looked cozy and well thought. We did´t have much time to settle into the apartment before our first guests came, as we received the keys on a Monday, carried the furniture four stories up night to Tuesday, and before twelve that day we had our first guests. We kindly suggested to them to stroll around the city for a couple of hours, to let us set up their bedroom in the mean time. It all went accordingly, in a fast paced speed, and by Thursday the apartment was full.
We marketed it through AirBnB, cause that was what we perceived as the easiest in our case. Also, even though we had some expenditures with the projects start up and finishing sequence, we ended up with a solid surplus after all costs were covered. I had to try out the idea, to test it on the marked and get some general input, in order to figure out how to build it the best way in the future. In my entrepreneur class, they call it lean start up. To engage with the public, before you invest all your money into a project or product. Now that you mention it, a "Pop-Up Hostel" would be very interesting if this does´t get realized before the summer.
And thats why I´m here, to find people who are interested to scale such a venture, and preferably before the strong Norwegian summer season.
