At the moment there are over 30 new people signing up for the Forum every week, and it's probably going to reach 2500 registered users sometime next week. It would be great to hear 30 new introductions every week...

If you're new to the site, please take a few minutes to introduce yourself here :)

Do you work at a hostel? (you don't have to mention the name of a hostel if you prefer to remain anonymous)
How did you become interested in hostels?
Where are your favorite travel destinations? (and why)
Do you know of any good places where you think new hostels should be opened up?

I own an eco-farm in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Southern Spain. Orgiva, the local market town is a 15 min walk from the farm and is on a bus rout from Granada and the coast so accessible. The farm is very beautiful on a terraced wooded mountain side and also has a swimming pool filled with natural mountain water and not chlorinated. The accommodation is small at present, with a double a single and a room with a bunk bed. There is also a tepee on a lower terrace and another building which is perfect for conversion to hold up to 16 people. I am finding that my guests are enjoying being able to leave the bustle of the city and spend a few days in the peace and quiet of the countryside , there is also opportunity here to go horse riding, mountain biking and delta flying, besides taking walks in spectacular scenery or just resting in a hammock by the pool. I have lots of fruit trees of many kinds, and grow some organic veg. which I invite my guests to pick for themselves. The hostel is called Alpujarra Backpackers and has its own website of that name.

Hi everybody,
my name is Chris and I'm just wondering if anybody knows of any opportunities to work in or around Berlin (obviously Hostel work is preferable) I speak German, as well as some Italian and some Spanish (and if you hadn't figured out, English). Any help or advice would be gratefully received, I am only looking for work that would enable me to be able to afford to live in the city itself too...I am degree qualified and have experience in customer service and sales, I even used to run bars at Old Trafford!!

I am very new to this business, actually I have no experience whatsoever. A lot of my family members presently own hotels throughout the USA, but none of them have ever given the thought of owing or operating a hostel. With a friend of mine who has stayed at numberous hostels throughout Europe and Asia, we have come together and decided to explore this business. We are presently seeking to go into a lease to own for an existing vacant building which we were told already has the certificate of occupancy "transient hotel" I am located in NY and is curious to find out more info on the new law that was passed on May 1st 2011 banning/closing down hostels in NYC... can someone tell me if this would apply to a brand new business now starting up and has the proper zoning and occupancy useage as a hostel.
We are now doing our due diligence and will need lots of help in the management and operations of a hostel....this is a very big challenge ahead of us...we will certainly need all the help and advise we can get.

Hello Everyone,

I'm Manas Rawat, founder of Mingle Trips (http://www.mingletrips.com).

We are a platform for travelers to meet each other and also locals. We simply match people on destination and dates and have an easy to use in-site messaging system that users can use to communicate with each other without revealing any other contact/personal details.

We are building it as a widget that can be added to any hostel / travel booking site. This will be exciting for the travelers. The Hostel owners will gain by delighting the travelers and also since the travelers will spend more time on their site and hopefully come back for repeat bookings too.

I joined this forum to talk to hostel owners - get their feedback and customize the widget accordingly.

Nope, I dont have a hostel - not yet atleast :)

How did you become interested in hostels?
I stayed in a hostel in Berlin and loved the concept. I made some friends there too. And I realized that it would have been so much more fun if I knew in advance who all would be there and made plans with some people in advance.

Where are your favorite travel destinations? (and why)
Phuket/Thailand - Beautiful beaches, awesome accommodation at reasonable prices, friendly people, lotsa beach activities.

Do you know of any good places where you think new hostels should be opened up?
Agra, India - Jaipur, India - Varanasi, India

My name is Craig, and I am the Sales Manager (Australia - Pacific) for CMS Hospitality. http://cmshospitality.com

We provide software solutions to hostels across the globe under the name of GuestCentrix. We have been a supplier to the hostel and backpacker industry for over a decade, and have been supplying the hospitality industry for almost 30 years.

We currently have offices in Sydney (Australia), Christchurch (NZ) and London (UK and Europe).

We consider ourselves to be a part of the world of hostels, and hopefully not seen "just" a supplier. We have attended events such as WYSTC for several years, and have also attended the World Hostel Conference in New York in 2010, and were a sponsor of the same event in 2011 in Vancouver.

At these events, along with my colleagues, try to be the first at the bar, and the last to leave..... and are always up for a great time with hostel operators!
