I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

I am interested in opening a Hostel in Mexico. I have no idea which city, and i pretty much have no idea how to run a Hostel. well, i have ideas! but they may not be able to run a hostel.
Advice would be great!

I'm Andrew. I'm an American who can speak 2 languages fluently (English and Spanish) and can fake his way through French and Japanese (a few weeks of practice makes an immense difference, but due to a lack of use, I always forget them).
Anyways, I'm on here because I think it would be fun to run a hostel. This right now is a theory. I would really like to find someone who could take me sometime between January and May for anywhere from a month to two or three months (or more? Maybe?) and let me work at their hostel for experience and make sure I don't hate it (it's amazing what can happen to theories when they're injected with reality). I think I'll love it, but it's best to know before dealing with investors and purchasing real estate.
I mentioned my 2 and 2-half languages, but I am willing to learn any others to work at a hostel (I can accomplish quite a bit between now and winter).
The questions I have revolve around two main points:
1) What do I need to work in a hostel in another country (do I need any sort of Visa, or is it easy to do an "under the table" agreement?)?
2) Anyone need any help in the January - May months? I can work a few weeks or I can work a couple of months. Both work for me.
Until then, I'll hunt for the answers on this board.

I'm completely new to backpacking (hostels)- didn't realise it was still popular until I left UK two years ago on a one way ticket to make Africa my home.
I rocked up at Fat Pony for a few nights, moved onto Die Koo (near Montagu, in the Breede Rivier Valley area) and 'stumbled' into Tourism for a year. I have returned many times for short hols & even some farm sitting!
In my past life I've been involved with multimedia & promotions (amongst others) and my last 'job' was working with local government and NOW! I'm here- home at last!
We are all still learning and I have many things to learn about the Hostelling world- like the guys out here don't say MTB (!). And if I mention half & full board, guys look at me funny! I know I can use my 'Scottish-Englishness' to promote Fat Pony!
I was very pleased to stumble accross Hostel Management- I can't believe that I haven't found it before; on one of my many Internet searches. Two months into my current position & I find it- I am so happy to have done so! The owners hadn't heard of you guys either & they attend all SAYTC AGMs. You guys really need to hook up with local tourism offices & hostelling organisations worldwide & get the Word out there! This is a great resource. Yes- I've been browsing the forums already :)
I am looking forward to seeing how this great community continues to grow & expand....

My name is Dave and for the past year am the owner of Amakaya Backpackers Hostel in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. I have made many changes since taking over and have hopefully made improvements that oure guests are happy with - seems so with the return visits and recommendations we are getting.
Plettenberg Bay is often termed the 'jewel of the Garden Route' and we are now in whale watching season which means the town will be busy from beginning September until March next year.

We're Harry (UK) and Alexandra (US) and we're currently looking for hostel work, specifically in Mexico.
We met travelling and are now starting a new journey together through Mexico and Central America. After months of living in the cold UK weather we want to hit the coast and work by the beach. We have a one way ticket into Cancun and plan to travel as far as we can for as long as we can.
We don't have a time limit only a limit in budget of course so working our way around the globe is the perfect option!
One of our long term goals is to own a hostel so we hope to gain experience and hopefully do a little networking along the way :)
We look forward to being a part of the hostel management community :)

Hi there,
Andrew from Alnwick in Northumberland, currently managing a brand new hostel in Alnwick. We have been open since May 2011 and have had a good response from the many guests we have seen already. We were all very excited to be opened officially by The Queen in June. A pretty special opening! I look forward to catching up with you all.

I'm Wungsu from Bali. Travel a bit and always stayed in a hostel because the atmosphere is perfect for me. I am interested to open a hostel in Bali that have been mostly there are only hotels. Hopefully by joining this forum i will learn more and well prepared before I start my hostels.
