Introduce Yourself

Hi,

I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

Hello, my name is Trixie. I have been a big fan of staying in hostels since i first started traveling in 1997. I worked at a hostel when I lived in Berlin 2000-2002. Back then I started thinking about wanting to own and operate a hostel of my own, but then I moved back to America and went back to bartending. 2009-2001 I moved to Japan and taught English. Now I'm in Istanbul and thinking again that I would like to open a hostel, here. So I have just begun working on a business plan. I have so much work ahead, but thanks to this awesome website, I have been able to easily find answers to many of my questions. If there are any members here in Istanbul, I would love to try to meet in person sometime. I seriously need a partner that speaks Turkish.

Hi everyone.

I was recommended to this site by my flatmate, but took a long time to register. I am 28 y.o., have worked as live-in staff, held some positions while studying, got to be assistant manager (de-facto manager) for a whole gap year. I worked for a known travel guide publisher for quite a few summers also.

Now, I work with an IT company, a software developer that provides the engines of some hotel/hostel reservation websites. I just prefer not to say names because I still have a "quarantine" period in regard of my appointment as travel guide. But I hope to engage in some interesting conversations, and try to give insights/opinions that might have those who work in this wonderful and challenging business of hostels ;p

Hi everyone,
This is my first post on the site- me and my husband Steve are hoping to own our own hostel one day and are trying to deveop our knowledge and understanding of how to go about this while the bank balance slowly grows!

We met in Australia while backpacking. We both have experience of working in hostels and backpacker entertainment from our backpacking days and my husband also has maintanence experience and extensive bar training. I am a qualified artist and primary school teacher but my true love in life is travelling. One day we hope to run a small harvest work hostel in Australia. We are currently living in Hong Kong under a teaching contract which is due to finish next June (2012). For us, the next chapter of our life will be about building on our experience and training in order to support the realisation of our ambition. We are hoping that this site will be able to offer us such opportunities.

I want to open a hostel in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. It is outside the historic center but there is public transportation that stops on the street in front of the house. There are 5 bedrooms each with own bath, a pool and large outdoor area with shade and places to hang hammocks. I would like to attract backpackers and travelers who are 30+ and are traveling with friends and family. I can have private and double rooms as well as the typical dorm with bunk beds. I do not want it turn into party central, more of a place to relax between sightseeing jaunts.

There are already several hostels in the Merida area. Also, how long does it take to begin making a profit on a hostel. Would like to hear from hostel owners in Mexico, South American and Central America.

Hello everyone.
I work in a Moscow Trans-Siberian Hostel and came here to ask for help.
Spring and summer time is supposed to be a period when the hostel is 70-80 % full. We can't get even a poor 50 %
I'm sorta dispaired.

hi!
I'm a student at Rio, and I in the last years was thinking about own a Hotel or Hostel in the future... when I realized that a lot of foreigners have interest in opening a hostel here in Rio, and most of the open ones are run by foreigners, and that tourism is becoming a huge market in my city (with 75% occupancy during the year, and 95% in high season), I decided to don't wait, and risk myself now.

I have a shameful capital to start (about €20,000...) with property rents starting at €6,000 in good touristic places (such as Copacabana, Ipanema, Arpoador) plus €150,000 deposit required in some places, and outrages Brazilian fees to open a business, is more then a challenge to make it work... is almost impossible.

But I hope to have good luck, and learn a lot from people with experience up here.
Is there anyone in the same situation? :o

I have been enjoying hostels for the last 6 years. So this year I'm going to work in hostels to gain the experience from inside out.
My intention is to start looking to open a hostel.
