Thanks for that. I'll add that to my list of things to review in the next month.
If it wasn't already mentioned above, another option is to use Web-based software. Examples:
What kinds of systems does your hostel use to manage reservations and guests?
Here are some of the ones that I have seen:
Any others to add? Recommendations or warnings about one system vs. another?

Yeah I had one of those but some of them look quite nice. ResEngine seems to be nicely laid out.
One feature i'd like to see is to automatically manage and move future reservations.

Is there anybody else who runs Fidelio? I am pretty happy with it. Even though it is not a hostel software at all but it does the job pretty good. Very strong financial/billing functions and very useful groups department, which is very essential for us. I should admit though that we use only one small part of the whole program.
(We use Fidelio V8)

Can I ask where the hostel is and how you are paying for the program?
Is there an annual fee or simply a once off payment?

^^Fidelio is a pain in the butt dos program. The last hotel I worked at was in the process of upgrading to Opera since Fidelio was no longer supported. The crashes I had to deal with. Ugh, always on Friday afternoons or Sunday mornings when support was seemingly never around.

We are in Prague. We do pay monthly support fee of roughly 800 EUR. I am not sure how they made it work at the begginning. I however tend to believe that there was a set up (lisence) fee. Every country is different, you should contact your local Sales Dept for further info.

Very stable. Crashed once ever since I have been working for Plus Prague. As for the support guys, yea, that happens. Not the best support ever. True.

Our Property Management software is called Dorm Project. Been around over 10 years designed just for hostels. I am yet to see a better integrated booking engine for the hostel website than what we provide you. Have a look at an example on www.thenaughtysquirrel.com and www.funkyhostel.com
We are the only PMS that works on Windows, Linux and Macintosh or any combination you like. You can open the PMS on your laptop anywhere in the world remotely.
We integrate nicely with hotel agents so you can gain bookings from non traditional hostel guests. I can hear the arguments against this already :) but we deliver a lot of consultation advice with our software so you get the correct setup for the particular agent.
Every hostel that started using our software in this recession has gained more bookings than they did prior to using our software.
Staff training videos online on You Tube and password protected Manager training videos viewable in our backoffice.
When the internet is down our software continues to work.
Users included the awarded Best Hostel Germany 2008 and Best Hostel USA 2008.
You can change room types yourself, We do not charge for each booking from agents, No server required at your hostel, Fully automated so no need to allocate bookings to rooms, Ability to sell one room under multiple tied room types, Anything you do want in a report we can do, Anything you don't want in a report we can do.
and a lot more cool stuff that you will like that I am not going to go in to here like drag and drop, integrates with key card machine etc. www.hosteloffice.com

Hi All
I have been reading these discussion, but really not clear yet, maybe bc I don´t know much about it since I am starting the developing of our hostel website and booking system for a 54 beds property. What should I considered? or what I should avoid to do during the design phase?
- Should I register with world hostel and this solve all my reservations problem?
- Do they provide me with an engine booking system?
- Should I consider any key issue in order to integrate these kind of booking systems into my webpage?
- If I use Paypal, will solve my reservation issues when a passenger wants to pay with credit cards, avoiding direct high credit card cost?
Please, any advise on the start up phase of a hostel & the key decisions about webpage, booking system, payment considerations at this stage will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
JC
