Hi,
I worked in hostels for many years and realized that there weren't many resources for people who run hostels or who want to open a hostel. I hope that you enjoy the site and find it useful. If you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, please let me know. My goal is to create a resource that will promote hostels and hostelling, especially in places where hostelling is not as common (e.g., here in the USA). Post in this section to introduce yourself to the other forum users.

Hello folks!
I'm Adam, from Budapest. Pleasure to meet y'all.
I ended up here because I'm looking to get back into the hostel business as a receptionist. My long-term plans of opening a hostel can (and will have to) wait, but I miss the atmosphere way too much.
Anyway, just saying hi. Thanks for a place to stay! ;-)

Welcome to the site Adam!
A lot of folks on this forum know what it's like to feel like you need a hostel fix after being away for a while. Are your long term plans to open the hostel on hold due to financial reasons or is there something else stopping you?

Oh yeah, "hostel fix" describes it just fine.
As for the long term plans, I'm experiencing a bit of a financial setback, on account of spending much of the last two years in various hospitals. But now I'm back :-)

Hello My name is Mike.
I live here in the United States and I see a lot of potential for opening a hostel. The area I live in has thousands of travelers from Europe each year. Most of them are students between the age of 18 and 26 with little money to spend.
There are a number of people in the area that rent rooms to these travelers, but most of them are still private rooms at a considerably high price, particularly for a traveling student. Fortunately (I believe for me) the idea of a hostel is not well known in this country and hasn't yet been used, at least to its fullest potential, here in my area.
A friend from Sweden recommended the idea and I am very interested in starting one. Although I have heard of them before, I have never stayed in a hostel and can only assume at this point how to run one.
I am very glad to find this forum and meet people with more information. :)

Welcome to the site Mike!
The forum is a great place to start learning about running a hostel. There are usually several ways to do anything, and the discussions here can help you see pros and cons of multiple approaches to hostel management.
If your area has the travelers and the need of a hostel, then it sounds like you have huge potential already. It would be a good idea to visit some other hostels and see what it is like to be a guest before you get too far into your plans. Speculation is fine, but there's no substitute for knowing first hand how you like to be hosted in a hostel.
Good luck with the project, and feel free to post your questions and observations as they come up!

Hi folks,
After a few months away from forums I have found my way back again - hope you have all had a prosperous year so far and are looking forward to a peaceful festive season.
I manage Alnwick Youth Hostel, opened in June 2011 by H.M. The Queen - a great base to start from. As time has progressed we have developed a good following of regular families and groups using us for study visits, family holidays, wedding accommodation and the like. All in all the past 18 months have been pretty hectic. If any one is thinking of setting up I am happy to offer any help I can.
Best wishes
Andrew
